Dia-log
Cochlear Implant Journal & Activity Book
by Farah Bader, Jad Bader, and Shirley Chavolla
The Dia-log Communication Journal is a shared logbook designed to give everyone in a child’s support “village”—parents, teachers, speech-language pathologists, and other caregivers—a single place to record day-to-day observations, victories, and concerns. By noting specific vocabulary practice, speech behaviors, hearing challenges, and contextual details (e.g., “Lily said ‘green go’ at the traffic light” or “couldn’t hear friends at lunch”), the journal captures the subtle clues that reveal how well a child with cochlear implants is accessing sound and language across settings. Regular, detailed entries make patterns visible, spotlight progress (such as mastering target /g/ words), and flag emerging issues (like fatigue or muffled hearing) so the team can adjust therapy goals, check hearing technology, or reinforce strategies at home.
Rooted in creator Farah Bader’s own experience growing up as the only deaf member of her family, the Dia-log embodies the principle “nothing about us without us.” It turns scattered snapshots into a continuous narrative, ensuring accountability, continuity of care, and truly collaborative problem-solving. Parents remain the experts on their child’s everyday interactions, teachers and clinicians contribute professional insights, and together the team builds a language-rich environment that bridges classroom, therapy room, car rides, and kitchen tables—filling in the missing pieces of each child’s spoken-language puzzle
